May, 2008: When a man and woman decide to marry, the man’s family must come to meet the family of the woman. The man’s family brings with them lots of gifts or “bride price” – these can include simple symbolic items to honor the tradition or elaborate and expensive things, even cars or cows. This one was somewhere in between – a sofa and two comfortable chairs, a portion of a cow with a black sock on its leg, a live black chicken and goat, cases of soft drinks, cases of beer, huge bags of rice, boxes of greens, a set of suitcases, baskets and baskets (maybe 24) or various items of food, a flower basket with fruit woven in, two or three dozen pink bags, each containing a gomes and a kanzu.
